“Our deepest, most profound stirrings of self-appreciation, self-love and self-knowledge, surface in the presence of a person whom we experience as totally accepting”
What is Counselling?
The above quote sums up Counselling beautifully. Counselling is about providing you with a safe, confidential and nonjudgmental space for you to be with your inner most thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged, criticised or corrected. A space where YOU can be who YOU are and for that to be wholly accepted and respected. Being able to share 'your story' is part of the healing process, however, sometimes our environments have taught us what we 'should' or 'should not' do which can include not talking about yourself! Counselling offers you a place where this is invited and encouraged, where you are free to question, explore and wonder, whilst being supported and guided by a professional.
How can Counselling help?
I believe that we are all unique individuals with our own unique set of innate needs for which we are instinctively motivated towards getting met, in order to reach our fullest potential. However these needs can get lost or hidden when we have repeatedly adapted our behaviour to meet the needs of others and/or our environment. Similarly, if we have suffered trauma or had our needs rebuffed or rejected in some way, we can adapt our behaviour to compensate. This can lead to the formation of negative beliefs about ourselves and/or our environment and affect how we see and make sense of our world. Sometimes we can develop unhelpful coping mechanisms which may have once been useful, however have ceased to be anymore. With the right conditions and the appropriate support, counselling can help you to identify and make sense of your feelings, change unhelpful behaviours and gain new insights.
How does it work?
My work is collaborative, flexible and at your pace. I approach counselling with a focus on developing and increasing your self-awareness; self-acceptance and responsibility. Counselling is not about giving you advice as I believe that you are the expert on you. Therefore, I will provide the right space and environment for you to be listened to and heard. Using my knowledge and skills I will facilitate your process of exploring and understanding your thoughts, feelings and needs and where necessary, support you in making any changes towards a more fulfilled and happier you.
By developing your self-awareness, this can help you to gain new insight and perspective. Awareness is often the key change, if that is what's right for you at that time. Being client led however, change is of course optional and not expected or desired by me. Self-acceptance is key to living more authentically and feeling more integrated as a person. When we are not living authentically or cannot accept all parts of ourselves, we can sometimes experience a sense of guilt or a feeling like we might get 'found out'. Taking responsibility and owning our problems, empowers change and can help to bring back a sense of control in our lives.
